Christmas Carol by Michele Gorman

5 Star

One winter wedding, two happy couples, three ex-boyfriends. And a very uncomfortable weekend.

Carol hates Christmas. Being recently dumped, she’s not crazy about weddings either. So her sister Marley’s nuptials, over the Christmas weekend, are making her positively Scrooge-like. When she arrives at the stately home in rural Scotland to find her three ex-boyfriends in attendance, Carol has no choice but to face her ghosts to discover what really happened in those relationships, learning a lot about herself in the process. As the snow falls outside and the fire crackles in the hearth, might one of the wedding guests become the harbinger of Christmases to come?

If I wasn’t in the mood for Christmas yet before reading Michele Gorman’s Christmas Carol, I certainly was after devouring the story. Bring on the warm sweaters and gingerbread.

Gorman takes my favorite topic, love and combines it with another favorite: Christmas. How can it go wrong? Well, let me assure you, with this book, nothing goes wrong.

Meet Carol, a character you will find easily lovable even though she is clearly inspired by the age old fictional masterpiece, Scrooge. The breezy way Gorman weave the classic Christmas Carol story into this modern day take is enchanting. I felt a familiar tug at my holiday tradition heartstrings as I read along.

Carol is the maid of honor in her sister’s wedding and is begrudgingly attending the festivities. Imagine her Scrooge like attitude when she finds out her sister has not only invited one of her exes to the wedding, but THREE exes arrive to make Carol one ticked off bridesmaid.

Enter the ghosts of relationships past. I just love the theme of this book. It was fun to know where things MIGHT be headed in the story because of the familiarity of the classic Christmas story, but there were surprises and twists around each corner.

This book is written in a funny, warm way, with a gentle humour and is easy to follow. It is a quick read and I would have loved to have more of it! I love all of the characters and finding out why each unique man is currently a part of Carol’s past. It was like three great love stories in one!

Read it now or wait for the snowflurries to come for the full holiday effect, but either way, pick up this easy Christmas story for a fun read!
