Getting Even by Sarah Rayner

5 Star

How would you feel if your best friend at work betrayed you? Was secretly having an affair with an influential colleague? Won a coveted promotion, then teamed you up with a mere junior, leaving you feeling completely demoted? What would you do? For Ivy there's no choice. The only person she has ever trusted, Orianna, has blown it big time. So there's only one way forward: revenge.

Ivy's campaign is brilliant, if horribly destructive, and she's determined to get even with the woman who has dared to cross her. But is Ivy really the innocent party? Or is she hiding secrets of her own?

Kathryn - 5 Star

Just finished reading Getting Even and I have to say that this novel was a thrilling read.  My first Sarah Rayner novel and I’m decidedly hooked on her style and the way she wove this story.

Initially I was attracted to Rayner’s characters:  seemingly naïve Orianna (with her earnest need to do her best) expecting others to do the same and slightly edgier Ivy- best friends and creative partners in an ad agency in London.  It wasn’t long though before things started to get more complicated and the darker side of Ivy’s personality presented itself.  I was thoroughly disgusted by her behaviour and couldn’t wait to find out how she was brought to justice!

At the same time though Sarah Rayner did give enough of Ivy’s personal story the empathy I needed to not write her off completely.  Though undoubtedly horrid, we knew she was likely coming from a childhood of distrust and dishonesty, not that that excused her in any way…  Orianna also came to light the more I kept reading- her initial simplicity was actually just genuine honesty and I was thrilled about her strength and smarts as the novel progressed.

My only frustration was Dan and Orianna’s relationship. I wished it could have survived the lies and twisted stories…. however it did add to the thrill of later discoveries!  Aside the main players there were also a number of secondary characters that rounded out the story to perfection.  Not a thing was left dangling and I loved the novel from start to finish.
