The Lost Art Of Mixing by Erica Bauermeister

4 Star

Lillian and her restaurant have a way of drawing people together. There’s Al, the accountant who finds meaning in numbers and ritual; Chloe, a budding chef who hasn’t learned to trust after heartbreak; Finnegan, quiet and steady as a tree, who can disappear into the background despite his massive height; Louise, Al’s wife, whose anger simmers just below the boiling point; and Isabelle, whose memories are slowly slipping from her grasp. And there’s Lillian herself, whose life has taken a turn she didn’t expect. . . .

Their lives collide and mix with those around them, sometimes joining in effortless connections, at other times sifting together and separating again, creating a family that is chosen, not given.

The Lost Art of Mixing started off very promising and the writing style of the author is very delightful. I absolutely adore the way she describes characters and events but I cannot say that I loved the book unfortunately despite wanting to very much.

Bauermeister took a great idea for a story and unfortunately didn't seem to have the proper direction to develop the story correctly. I have to also wonder about who edited this book. The story itself, with all of the characters and their intricacies, was a very interesting one to me, yet I found the way it was developed to be quite confusing most of the time as it jumped around from character to character and time frame constantly. It would take me a few moments to readjust to the new voice speaking and time they were speaking in which I felt took away from the overall magic of the story.

The premise of the story, the characters and the details are all rich and full so I would still recommend trying out The Lost Art of Mixing as I think this author is great. Perhaps the jumping around in the story just wasn't for me but it might not bother others.
