Someone Else's Love Story by Joshilyn Jackson

5 Star

At twenty-one, Shandi Pierce is juggling finishing college, raising her delightful three-year-old genius son Natty, and keeping the peace between her eternally warring, long-divorced Catholic mother and Jewish father. She’s got enough complications without getting caught in the middle of a stick-up in a gas station mini-mart and falling in love with a great wall of a man named William Ashe, who willingly steps between the armed robber and her son.

Shandi doesn’t know that her blond god Thor has his own complications. When he looked down the barrel of that gun he believed it was destiny: It’s been one year to the day since a tragic act of physics shattered his universe. But William doesn’t define destiny the way other people do. A brilliant geneticist who believes in science and numbers, destiny to him is about choice.

Now, he and Shandi are about to meet their so-called destinies head on, in a funny, charming, and poignant novel about science and miracles, secrets and truths, faith and forgiveness,; about a virgin birth, a sacrifice, and a resurrection; about falling in love, and learning that things aren’t always what they seem—or what we hope they will be. It’s a novel about discovering what we want and ultimately finding what we need.

I just adore Joshilyn Jackson's writing. She has such an original voice. I can honestly almost feel her characters speaking next to me, that is just how vivid she creates them. Someone Else's Love Story is anything but typical and her descriptions are like nothing I have ever read before. I very much like the fact that she has such a gift in describing things in a different way but in a way that makes things come alive.

Her characters are incredibly well developed in every way. Every little nuance, every little detail has been thought out from the way they think, the things they say and do. I can't help but wonder exactly how she imagines and brings them to life in such a big way as it is almost like she would have to be them to know so much about them.

I fell in love with absolutely everything about this story despite it dealing with some uncomfortable issues like rape. Not everything is as it seems and there are a lot of details that come up and are shocking or quite unexpected. Everything made sense even if not something you could imagine, and I loved that this story was just so different yet so captivating.

Someone Else's Love Story made my heart ache and the characters from young to old, big to small, all gripped me in some way with their own stories and issues. I could feel for all of them and wanted everything to work out. For love to win despite it all. I was never disappointed and I craved to keep reading and did in fact read this almost in one day it is just that good.

Anyone who is a fan of Joshilyn' Jackson's writing will love Someone Else's Love Story despite it being a more serious feel than her previous work and if you have not yet discovered her yet, you will most likely love her after this book as it is a great place to start!
