Before I Go by Colleen Oakley

5 Star

Twenty-seven-year-old Daisy already beat breast cancer three years ago. How can this be happening to her again?

On the eve of what was supposed to be a triumphant “Cancerversary” with her husband Jack to celebrate three years of being cancer-free, Daisy suffers a devastating blow: her doctor tells her that the cancer is back, but this time it’s an aggressive stage four diagnosis. She may have as few as four months left to live. Death is a frightening prospect—but not because she’s afraid for herself. She’s terrified of what will happen to her brilliant but otherwise charmingly helpless husband when she’s no longer there to take care of him. It’s this fear that keeps her up at night, until she stumbles on the solution: she has to find him another wife.

With a singular determination, Daisy scouts local parks and coffee shops and online dating sites looking for Jack’s perfect match. But the further she gets on her quest, the more she questions the sanity of her plan. As the thought of her husband with another woman becomes all too real, Daisy’s forced to decide what’s more important in the short amount of time she has left: her husband’s happiness—or her own?

Sabrina-Kate - 5 Star

Before I Go broke my heart in a million pieces yet somehow also put it back together. It was a devastating story about a young woman’s reaction to the horrible news that she is dying of cancer. As soon as I started reading the book, I felt a huge lump grow in my throat and my heart felt heavy. Cancer is such an awful thing, and the novel brought with it memories of my own horrible personal family experience. I knew that I might find this book difficult to read- which I did- but I also did love reading it because it brought a positive light to the situation despite everything.

This story was so emotional and made me shed many tears. For the frustration that people cannot be cured from this, that people lose those they love and that Daisy felt that she needed to give up her love to help him find a new life and move on without her.

This book was definitely one of my all time favorite reads as I cannot fathom how the author was able to capture the emotions and journey Daisy found herself on. I cannot imagine finding out that you are dying when you thought you were beating the odds. It must be such a devastating feeling.

I recently lost my Dad to cancer and this book came at a time when I was struggling with the thought of never seeing him again. Even though the story was a very sad one, it also ultimately gave me some comfort and felt like an important message was contained inside.

  1. I was extremely impressed that the author managed to take such a difficult subject and not make me a total emotional mess while reading it. It really was not what I would call a sad book, given what it is about. I really liked it (4 stars) as well.
