Hilary Grossman Stranded on a Desert Island

If you could only have one book with you, what would it be?

I would want a notebook so I could write and doodle. If I’m writing, I would have a chance to remain somewhat sane. It is funny; when I am very stressed only writing calms me down.

What one luxury item would you want to be stranded with?

A fully stocked Kindle – or better yet – an iPad- with a fully stocked Kindle app. (I recently developed an unhealthy addiction to Candy Crush).

What is the one practical item you would want to have with you to use?

A toothbrush.

Would you enjoy the solitude, even briefly, or would it drive you crazy?

I think I would enjoy the solitude for about two days, three days tops. After that I would lose my mind.

If you could be stranded with one other person, who would you want it to be?

My husband. He has a great way of always calming me down. Also, after surviving Hurricane Sandy (we didn’t have power for 5 weeks and a good part of home was destroyed) I know first hand that if he was with me we’d survive.

What modern technology would you miss the most?

The Internet… Although I probably would enjoy the forced disconnect for one day.

What food or beverage would you miss the most?

It’s a toss up between coffee and wine. If I don’t have coffee in the morning I am a mess.  But being stranded on a deserted island would be very stressful, so wine would help relax me. As for food, I’d miss pasta the most.

How many days do you think you would cope without rescue?

I always surprise myself. I tend to be tougher than I think I am. I think I would easily be able to last at least a month.

What is the first thing you would do when rescued?

Take a shower!
So many of these questions remind me of my experience during Hurricane Sandy.  Since we didn’t have electricity we didn’t have heat or hot water. The storm took place the end of October and the weather was frigid. I couldn’t bear to take an ice cold shower, so I didn’t. I worked night and day cleaning up our house and throwing out our soaking wet belongings. After about three and a half weeks my brother in law’s power was restored.  We’d go to his house daily for a shower.  The first shower I took after the storm I sunk down to the ground and cried. My entire life prior I took a shower for granted, and in that moment, I realized how fortunate I always was.

What would be your first Tweet or Facebook update upon your return?

I’m back!  Deserted Island 0 Hilary 1 #survivor.

Plan Bea

Could falling in love allow a cold, stubborn, and selfish women to open her heart back up to her family?

Beatrice Buchanan has spent more years than she can remember distancing herself from everyone close to her. She has no relationship with her grandchildren and the only time she speaks to her daughter is during her weekly fifteen-minute commute to the nail salon. When Bea meets Walter on a cruise she realizes there may be more to life than designer clothes and impressing the ladies at her country club.

We live our entire lives thinking we know those closest to us. But do we ever really?

On the outside, Annabel O’Conner has it all – the perfect husband, two adorable children, and an amazing job. The only thing missing is her mother’s love. When Bea begs her daughter to help plan her wedding, Annabel reluctantly agrees. Little does she know the impact of her decision or the surprise that is in store for her!
